The Gloucester is an ancient breed from the Severn Vale through to Gloucestershire. Gloucester’s were traditionally used as draught oxen and for small scale production of milk and cheese.
In 1796 Sir Edward Jenner discovered that milk maids who regularly handled cows were free from smallpox and it was from a Gloucester cow named Blossom that he created the first small-pox serum.
The Gloucester Cattle Society was formed in 1919 and after diminishing was reformed in 1972.
