Once known as ‘South Hams’
Originally considered a triple purpose breed for beef, milk and butterfat, since the 1960’s the breed has been selected purely for beef production to compete with other cattle breeds.
Mature bulls weigh in at 1200 - 1500kgs
Bulls are sexually mature at 15 - 18 months and can be put to use for 11 or 12 years
Heifers calve from 2 years of age and can be used for 15 years
The South Devon Herd Book Society was incorporated in 1891
